Illustrator, designer, storyteller

For the past three decades, I’ve been illustrating the stories and communication of American business. For eighteen years prior to that (1978-1996), I was a graphic designer hired by companies in technology, the arts, and furniture.

My illustration career started as a frequent contributor to The Harvard Business Review illustrating editorials by the likes of Peter Drucker and Daniel Goleman on subjects from leadership to executive compensation, creativity, and philanthropy. That tenure proved to be the right training to develop a style geared to explaining complex topics with—typically with wit and simplicity. This soon led to regular commissions for the pages of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Utne Reader, The Atlantic, Fortune, Time, and Bloomberg Business Week. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to attract assignments from international companies including Adobe, American Express, Boeing, Chevrolet, Deloitte, Google, Herman Miller, MasterCard, Mohawk Paper, Navigant, United Airlines, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Royal Mail, Pfizer, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and The Whitehead Institute. I have several long-term clients in Europe such as Baillie Gifford (UK), Mondadori Editore (Italy) and PNB Paribas (France).

  • I’ve created eight US postage stamps including the 2006 Love stamp and the 2010/11 commemorative Scouting stamps.

  • I’m a native of California and for the past 34 years I’ve lived with my wife and raised two children in Mill Valley, California. I work from two studios—Mill Valley and The Sea Ranch, California.
